The top traitors in NZ sport

Here’s a simple list that I’ll attempt to keep updated of the traitors in NZ sport. ie. those NZers who choose to take their NZ-born talent and represent another country. The list is currently not in any order.

Brendon McCullum

previously regarded on these pages and the NZ cricketing world as a top bloke, fantastic leader, and great NZ cricketer, Brendon has now become a traitor and currently leads the England cricket team. Most recently he gloried in beating us at cricket at Lords.

Russell Coutts

Russell, Russell, Russell. Sailed for NZ, won for NZ, made himself famous and rich, then turned tail and sailed for the opposition and beat us. Not nice. Not nice at all Russell. To think, I graciously let him sleep in our house growing up when he came down for a coaching trip to Tauranga.

James Lowe

currently representing Ireland in rugby. James is from Nelson and played for the Chiefs and the Maori All Blacks before becoming Irish. Notably scored a try against us in the defeat in 2021.

Here he is celebrating far too bloody enthusiastically against us.

I’m still going with this post…

Honourable mentions:

Ben Stokes – born in NZ but has little affinity with the place. He chooses to play for the poms.

Dean Barker – a NZer but not a very good one. Dean is famous for blowing a 8-1 lead in the Americas Cup and ultimately losing to Spithill. If that’s not traitorous, then it’s at least huge incompetence.
